Pozzo Casargiu di Montevecchio
One of the symbols of the Sardinian mining industry
Located in the suggestive mining region of Montevecchio, the Casargiu Well is a singular example of industrial archaeology.
The site, reachable by taking the dirt road that connects Ingurtosu to Montevecchio (SP66), at the bridge over the Rio Irvi, is located within the Telle concession and returns a significant page of regional history.
The well constitutes the extreme south of the Montevecchio vein which from this point takes the name of Ingurtosu vein to split into the secondary Cervo vein.
Its structure, essential but functional, was equipped with a steam extraction machine and a modern machine that operated wooden cages used to transport materials and miners. In addition to its technical importance, the Casargiu Well fits into a broader historical context: it was one of the symbols of the Sardinian mining industry, which between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries represented one of the main economic resources of the island.
